Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, South Africa. When she was 16 she won a local modeling contest and that became he start of her modeling career. Charlize Theron began modeling in Europe and from there she whent on to New York the year after. Modeling wasen't what she wanted so she decided to try her luck with ballet, which had been her biggest passion as a child. To her disapointment, a knee injury prevented her from dancing. Then in 1990, her father died.
In 1994, Gerda Theron, her mother, gave Charlize a one way ticket to Los Angeles. From then on she started visiting all of the agents on Hollywood Bulevard, but without luck. When visiting the bank to cash a check for $500 that her mother had given her she became furious when she learned that the bank could not cash her check because it was an out-state check. Charlize Theron made a scene, but to her fortune and agent gave her his card when he saw her outburst.
Through TV soap operas she learn the language. In 1995, she played her first role as a young mother in a park. Charlize Theron next appearance on screen was as Helga in 2 Days in the Valley in 1996, which landed her the role of Tina in That Thing You Do!, in 1996. After that she has played in movies like Devil's Advocate (1997), together with Al Pachino, Mighty Joe Young (1998), Cider House Rules (1999), Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), and Italian Job (2003).
Charlize Theron and boyfriend actor Stuart Townsend have turned down the chance to work together on the big screen many times because they're terrified of becoming another Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. On 29th of February, 2004, she was awarded with her first Academy Award for her performance in Monster (2003). She had to gain nearly 20kg for the role.
